Level Up: How Youth in Trinidad and Tobago Can Grow Strong with the 5 Cs

Real Talk: Youth Power is Real

If you're between 10 and 35 and living in Trinidad and Tobago, congrats, you’re officially a youth according to our National Youth Policy! But being a young person today isn’t easy. Across the country, many young people are facing challenges related to education, employment, and youth mental health in Trinidad and Tobago. There’s pressure from school, family, friends, social media, and let’s not even talk about trying to figure out your future. That’s why we’re talking about Positive Youth Development (PYD), an approach that’s all about building your strengths, not just fixing problems.

This article dives into how you can develop yourself using the 5 Cs for positive youth development, youth leadership and confidence building; backed by my sociological background where I talk about sociology legends like Emile Durkheim, Robert Merton, and Pierre Bourdieu and how your health and well-being fit into all this.

A Little Sociology 101 (Doh Worry, Iz Cool Ting)

Sociologists study how people interact with each other and with society. They’ve given us tools to understand how we grow and why we sometimes struggle.

  • Durkheim believed that we all need to feel connected to others (Durkheim 1997). When we’re isolated, we suffer. That’s why community matters.

  • Merton said that if society doesn’t give us fair chances to reach our goals, we may go looking for shortcuts (Merton 1938). This is why opportunities and support systems are so important.

  • Bourdieu talked about “social capital”, your relationships, your culture, and your know-how. All of this helps you succeed (Bourdieu 1986).

The 5 Cs: The Ultimate Glow-Up Formula

So what are PYD’s secret ingredients? It’s the 5 Cs, and here’s how they can level you up:

1. Competence

Skill up! Whether it’s academics, sports, tech, or leadership, this is your time to shine.

2. Confidence

Believe in your abilities. Try new things, fail sometimes, and bounce back stronger.

3. Connection

Friends, mentors, and even community groups act as youth support systems that play a critical role in youth development in Trinidad and Tobago by helping you feel supported and seen.

4. Character

Make good choices, show respect, and stand for something. People notice.

5. Caring

Look out for yuh bredrin and sistrin. Show empathy. Be kind eh it’s a superpower.

When you build these 5 Cs, you’re not just growing as a person, you’re also helping build a better Trinidad and Tobago.

From the Community, For the Community

You ever hear “It duz take ah village to raise ah chile”? In the Caribbean, your village really helps raise you. That’s why Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) is so important , it builds on what already exists in your area: family, elders, youth groups, schools.

Sociologist Bourdieu would call this your social capital, all the people and systems that help you move forward (Bourdieu 1986). You’re not in this alone.

Health Is Wealth: The Sociology of Staying Well

Did you know there’s a whole branch of sociology called health sociology? It looks at how things like poverty, gender, race, and community support affect your physical and mental health (Weitz 2015).

In Trinidad and Tobago, not everyone has equal access to healthcare or mental health services which highlights the need for more youth-friendly health and wellness support systems across communities. That’s why we must push for spaces where our youth can talk about anxiety, stress, identity, and everything in between.

Trinidad and Tobago's Plan

The National Youth Policy 2020–2025 wants to empower you with skills, confidence, and a voice. Here’s how they’re doing it:

  • Including youth in national decisions

  • Promoting leadership and entrepreneurship

  • Offering health, education, and job support

Note that a policy is not a political document, but instead a LEGAL one.

Final Vybes: Yuh Have Dis!

Sociology teaches us that we’re not just shaped by society, we can shape it too. Your voice matters. Your actions count. And with the 5 Cs and the right support, you can grow into the change-maker Trinidad and Tobago needs.

So keep growing, keep connecting, and remember tuh level up wit d 5 Cs of PYD!
